Multicolour dyeing 28Jan 2012

Kate was very pleased with this, her first dyeing, at Spinningschool on Saturday - The yarn is a mix of Dotty(one of her own sheep) and bamboo fibre from Uppingham Yarns- She used primary- red/yellow/blue- acid dyes which were blended in the dyebath. The way the colour is taken up by the different fibres makes it even more fascinating when you look closely.

  1. Very cheerful? What make of dye did you use?

    1. The dye is from the Russel dye system - not sure if they are still available - it is an acid dye. If you want to use them at the next SpinningSchool let me know and I'll bring them along. Pam

  2. As colourful as the new Symphonie knitting needles... How are you getting on with those needles by the way? The colours of this hank remind me of the sweater you knitted 20 odd years ago, the one Wendy Powell put through the dryer and 'condensed'.
I must send you the American Indian veggie dye book, next time I mail a package.

    1. The needles are such a joy and so versatile because you can knit from either end, in the round and change size -even knit twice along the same row!

    2. Yes, the dyeing is done in the same way as the pullover I did 25 years ago - if you look at the hat on 1st Jan post you can see the same yarn - now recycled into a hat - the body survived the tumble dryer but alas the sleeves were felted beyond hope!

    3. I'd be interested to see the dye book - have been reading an rather academic tome on prehistoric textiles and it is amazing what was known throughout the world - we think we are clever but just what the ancient civilisations achieved is incredible. It makes one wonder how much has been lost...
